Baby Care Part 2: How to bathe a baby

Hello mommies, this is part 2 of my baby care series.  I know you are probably saying I already know how to bathe a baby because i'm already a mom and I have grand kids as well.   Well, for those of you who already know how to do this, I'm just re-iterating this and I'm helping all the new moms out there and soon-to-be mommies.  On my previous post, part 1, I talked about how to change a baby's diapers, so if you missed it, you can click here.

Step #1
Gather up all of the bath necessities. Items ranging from: baby body wash, brush, shampoo, towel, baby bath tub or whatever you will be using to bathe him/her.

Step #2
Fill the tub with 2-3 inches of warm water (not hot water) at about 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

Step #3
Remove all of the baby's cloth and bring them to the tub.

Step #4
Slowly place your baby into the baby tub. Please use one hand to support their little neck and head. Remember to pour small amounts of water onto baby's body to keep them from getting cold.

Step #5
This is the fun part, you get to splash baby with water, washing their little body. Washing their little toes, fingers, back, neck, head and hair, and do this about a couple of times. Use a moistened cotton ball or wipe to clean his eyes and face. As goes for your baby's genitals, a routine washing is a great idea. If for some reason, there is dried mucus has gotten on the corners of your baby's nostrils or eyes, just use a small section of a moistened wipe to clean them.

Step #6
Rinse your baby thoroughly with a clean washcloth.

Step #7
Wrap your baby in a hooded towel or regular towel and pat him dry.  If their skin is a little dry, you might want to rub a mild lotion on them.

I hope this clears up some of your question that was puzzling you!

Best wishes to you and your new bundle of joy,
LaTersa Blakely

Tips for a new mom entrepreneur!

Have you started your home business?  Are you enjoying being the CEO of your company?  Well, I would like to just say congrats to you for accomplishing your dreams and goals.  Now, you can be home with your children and not have to worry about a 9 to 5 job anymore.  I know you are probably thinking what have I gotten myself into here.  This is a lot more work than I had in mind.  No need to fear, I'm here to share with you a few tips that I try to incorporate into my home based business to keep me from going bald!!!!

1) Learn to say NO!  When you are a first time or even new mom entrepreneur, there will be people or even close family members who will not take you or your business serious.  They will still require you to do all of the things that you use to do, while in the corporate world.  You will really have to become tough and say No.  It's o.k. to value your time and your work because if you don't value what you do, how do you expect someone else to.  One of the things, I do on a regular basis is keep a to do list on hand.  When I complete a task, I cross it off and put a star by it.  This really helps me to feel like I've accomplished something for that particular day.

2) Delegate your work load around the house. What I mean by this is if you have a spouse, children or parents around.  Ask them to help you with giving certain people a chore to complete.  Now, I know for myself, I often times bribe my babies (5 and 3 years old) to help keep their room clean. By doing so, I either treat them to the red box for one of the latest kids movies, or take them to the playground at McDonalds. Be creative when it comes to your kids. It all depends on the age bracket.  Now, with my husband, sometimes, I ask him to do a couple of loads of cloth to help keep them down to a load or two.  Most of the time, if he's at home, like the weekend, he will keep the kids down stairs or take them for a ride, so I can focus on my reading or getting things ready for the upcoming week.  I don't work per say with my business but, catching up on blogging and making videos.

3) Surround yourself with a positive network or group of people.  When you are starting a new business or just adding new ideas to your existing business, it's almost a must have to stay positive and have your closest circle of friends and family members be positive as well.  You can join various groups on facebook, or other ning social networking groups. When you are looking for groups to join, try searching groups within your niche or targeted marketed.  I can tell you from experience that when you surround yourself with like minded people, you will be amazed at all the great resources and knowledge that you will gain.  I mean I have been a member of CEOMamma since October of 2010 and by now my head should be biggest as an elephant from all the great knowledge and resources that I have obtained..  I would suggest joining some of these groups mentioned above to fellowship and share your experiences. You never know, someone just might have the answer to a question that you just can't seem to find an answer to.

4) Take care of your health! Yes, I said it.  See as mothers we always tend to get caught up in taking care of everyone and everybody else, that we tend to forget about self.  Well, I'm here to tell you that a hard head makes a very soft behind (my mama use to say).  Your body needs rest, and plenty of it.  If you have infants in the house, it is detrimental that you get as much rest as possible because you WILL most definitely need it.  Get your regular pap smears, visit your doctors on a regular basis.  Most importantly, eat a balanced meal daily and drink plenty of water.  Now, I'm guilty of this, I sometimes have forgotten to drink water, not because I don't like it, but because I have started my day off getting everything on my to do list done, and taking care of everyone else and have not even looked at a bottle water. I'm working on this. I now keep a bottle water by my bed and on my desk in my office.

5) Make room for emergencies!  What I mean by this is always be flexible.  Leave room for the oh so sweet surprises or emergencies.  For example, last week, my son had a horrible nose bleed and he had to picked up from school and rushed to the emergency room.  When I tell you, I had to keep my cool, and try to look like I was calm for my babies sake.  He was all panicky and scared, so like any mother would do when something is wrong with their little people, be brave and show no fear.  Believe it or not, kids can sense when something is not right.  But, thankfully, everything is fine and my little Ishmael is back to his normal big self.  Speaking of that, we just played with the bubbles. "who can blow the biggest bubbles". Now, that's the joy of being your own boss and not having to explain yourself or give an explanation for your reasons for having to leave work to attend to an ill child.

I do hope these tips will allow you to take a deep breath and to help you have a smoother journey on your way to the Donald Trump Level!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I want to hear from you, let me know your concerns and struggles.  If this has helped you in any way, feel free to tweet this and share it on facebook.  Until next time, God Bless.

Best Wishes,
LaTersa Blakely

What's the best sleeping position during the last trimester of pregnancy?

Hello everyone,

If you are in those last few months of your pregnancy, than finding a comfortable sleeping position is probably hard to find right now. For the most part, around the 7th or 8th month, you are probably saying things like: "I be glad when my due date is here or how about this one: "Will this baby ever come out, I'm so so tired". Does any of this sounds familiar? Well, I wanted to give you a few pointers, to help make your last month or so a little more comfortable.

1) Consult with your doctor if you are having serious problems with your sleep habits. Don't take it upon yourself to assume that everything is o.k.. I know when I was pregnant with my first child, It was so uncomfortable for me to sleep on my back. It made me feel like I couldn't breathe and I just felt like I was going to die.

2) According to doctors, the best position to sleep in is on your side.  It is safe for you and baby. Some doctors recommend sleeping on your left side as oppose to your right side. "Mainly because the vena cava is located on your right side and it helps the circulation of the blood flow to your baby".  If you are having trouble sleeping on either sides, try placing a pillow between your legs and under your stomach. If for some reason, you should wake up in the middle of the night on your back, please don't freak out, just position yourself on your side again.

I really and truly hope this helps you to maintain your comfort zone until your new bundle of joy arrives.

Best wishes,
LaTersa Blakely

5 Ways To Make Your Life Simple!

As most of you know today, is my son's birthday, So, Again, Happy Birthday to You Ishmael. Mommy Loves You!  Well, I'm here to share with you five ways that I plan to make my life simple in 2011.  I did a slide show of all of my goals on December 31, 2011.  Below are a few of the most important aspects of my life.

1) Spend More quality time with my family.  This year I have set aside specific time frames to spend time with the ones I love.  Included in my everyday schedule goes a little something like, 6 a.m., the alarm goes off.  Once I'm fully alert, I pray and read my daily devotions, shower and get started with my to do list.   My time in the morning is spent getting kids ready for pre-school, breakfast, and taking them to school. Then its off to get the big baby (hubby) ready and out the door for work.  My work hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the evenings.  This is where I design all those elegant diaper cakes, complete orders, take orders, blog, check twitter, facebook, and etc.  Now, once my kids are home from school, I have a few  little distractions because its kids time to them.  So I make it my business to get all of the major work done while my son is in school.

2) Do some form of exercise daily.  My goal is to loose 10 pounds by June 2010.  So, everyday, I run up and down my stairs, and of course I run and play with my babies.  I figured out from last year, that if you set too many unrealistic goals, that make them that much harder to accomplish.  I always say, start slow, and work your way up to the big ones.  Don't try to kill yourself in the gym and wear yourself out, just keep in mind that the weight did not come over night, and by all means, it surely is not going to leave over night.  Enjoy yourself right now on your way to where you are trying to go....
3) Drink plenty of water.  I would say the best thing I have decided to do is to make sure I drink my 8 glasses of water a day.  Not saying that I do it everyday, because I would be lying.  But, I do make an attempt to drink water everyday.  Its not that I don't like water, its just that sometimes, I get so caught up in what I'm doing that I nearly forget about it.

4) Encourage someone daily.  I know that there are many people who are praying for me and who have prayed for me throughout the beginning stages of my business.  So, to show my appreciation for all the love and support that was given and still is given to me, I give back.  If hubby, my babies, or anyone that come across my path that is down, or just need a few words of encouragement, then I try to be that sunshine that they need and to let them know that everything is going to be o.k..

5) Give and Show Love.  I know that might not sound like much to you; but giving love and showing love to others can bring a lot of joy in your heart.  I mean I love being kind to others and sharing my knowledge and thoughts with them.  When you are focused on giving more than receiving, it always put you in a better state of mind.

I really hope this helps you to find simplicity in your life this year!

Sincerely,
LaTersa Blakely

Why Diaper Cakes Rock!

Baby Shower Diaper Cakes are becoming more popular and people are starting to ask what's all the fuss about diaper cakes and why do they rock.  I'm here to share a few reasons why diaper cakes rocks.

1) Diaper Cakes are memorable!  What is your typical gift at most baby showers? Baby clothes, and clothes, and more clothes.  Most people bring clothes because its more feasible for your pockets, some people just don't know what to bring the new mom at the shower, or simply because it was something they know every parent needs besides diapers.  Well, when you are thinking of getting a gift for a baby shower, you want to think outside the box and try to get her something that she will be able to cherish and speak about for decades to come.  Most babies grow out of infant size clothes within the first month or even weeks, depending on what size the baby was at birth.  Now, on the other hand, when someone brings a diaper cake to the shower, that really start the conversation.  Does this sound familiar? "WOW, this is so creative or my all time favorite; "Now this is too cute, I'm not taking it down.

2) Diaper Cakes serves many purposes! Diaper Cakes can be used as a centerpiece at the baby shower. You can put it at the main table and little baby shower favors around it.  I guarantee you that it will surely be the talk of the town.  Also, after the baby shower, while waiting on the bundle of joy, you can set it in the nursery for decoration.

3) All parents need diapers and they are unique! Now diapers are something the new parent will need tons and tons of.  A newborn go through so many diapers that it is hard to keep count.  Babies are changed at least 7-8 times a day on average.  Well, keep in mind, if there are twins then that number doubles.  Instead of bringing a boring box of diapers, be creative and bring her a diaper cake.

I really hope this answers some of your questions about why you should purchase a diaper cake.. If you want to bring a diaper cake to your next baby shower, I would be glad to design a diaper cake for you.  Check out my website for more creative designs at http://www.diapercakesbylatersa.com.

Things a Mother of Twins Need To Know!

Having a baby soon?  Do you know what you are having? Well, this article is for you if you've recently found out that you are having twins.  It can be sometimes overwhelming dealing with the everyday issues of having one baby, but to find out that you are having twins. Now, that's a different story.  You are probably wondering, Lord will I ever get any rest, will I have to purchase two of everything.  Well sit back and relax, because these few tips will help ease your stress levels.

1) Get your little darlings on the same schedule.  I mean when you change one baby, make sure you change the other baby.  If one gets hungry and you give him/her a bottle; wake up the other sibling and give him/her a bottle too.  You will be glad you did.  Now at first, it may seem like its not working but rest assured, stick with it.  I know just from having one baby at a time, there needs to be a system in play to keep you from going insane.

2) Don't get two of everything.  When you think of having twins, the first thought that comes to mind, is will I need two baby cribs, two changing stations, two baby bags, and etc.  Well, the answer is simply no, you can use the same crib for the first couple of months because the babies are tiny.  Now, when they start to get older, then you will have to readjust the sleeping space.  But, as far as the changing stations, play areas, baby bags, you can share those items. Things like, comforters, sheets, washcloths, you will want to double up on these items because you have two baby bottoms to clean.

3) Going through Potty training can be great.  When you are potty training one baby, it can be sort of frustrating when they seem to not grasp the concept of using a potty.  But, when you have twins, they have someone to go through it with.  When they reach the terrible twos, they go through it with their twin; whereas a single baby have to go it alone.  They will always have a playmate and this can be a great thing for the mom because they can keep each other company.

4) Take advantage of store discounts.  For many of you, you probably are aware Babies R Us, they tend to give mothers of twins discount on diapers and other merchandise.  Check out Evenflo, Gerber, and Johnson and Johnson because they offer discounts as well.

5) Twin mothers have different stroller needs.  Yes, that's correct! In this situation, you got to choose which stroller works for you and your little people. I would recommend talking to other twin mothers and get their advice on what they chose.  But, as I've stated earlier, you got to make the final decision.  I would also suggest thinking about what type of life style you and your family has.  You may like to go jogging on a regular basis, so that would require you getting a jogging stroller. Some moms might like the side by side model so they can keep a close eye on the little ones.  Check around before you purchase one.

I really hope this will give you a few more answers to your questions and that it will allow you to make the best decisions for you.

Warm Regards,

5 Tips To Calm a Crying Newborn Down

For all the new moms out there, you are probably wonder how am I going to stop my baby from crying.  Well, I'm here to make your life a little better. As new moms, we are just determined to do anything in our power to make our little angel feel better and stop crying.  Sometimes our methods work and sometimes they don't, but that's o.k.  I will tell you from experience that sometimes no matter what method you try; that little one is just determined to be heard.  I mean I can recall times where I actually wanted to rip my hair from my head. And believe it or not, there were times that I literally cried myself because I felt helpless.  I have created a short list of things you can try and do at home with your own babies.  What you're probably find out is that you have to create your own little methods that works with you and your baby.  Not all babies are calmed down using the same techniques.

1) Swaddle the baby close to your chest.  What I mean by this is that wrap the baby in one of his/her cute baby blankets and hold them close to your chest. Babies are familiar with this because this allows them to hear the mommy's heart beat. While a baby is in the mother's wound, this is all to familiar to them and in turn this can soothe them.  I mean you have to realize that for the first nine months before giving birth to your precious baby, they are in this one little space that's dark and all kinds of stuff that excites them are taken place inside of your wound.  Go ahead and give it try!

2) Play Classical music. Boy, you are probably wondering, what does this do. Its something about the calmness and slow melody that classical music has that no other music has.  I am speaking from experience with both of my babies, when they were really really fussy, I would put in that classical musical cd for mommy and baby. It kept him calm and I would give them a bottle and once most of the bottle was gone, there you have a sleeping little baby.  Now, I even took this a step further because when I first found out that I was pregnant with my son, I immediately went to the internet and started searching for ways to interact with your baby while they are in your wound.  I found that by letting your baby listen to classical music while in the mother's room, that would calm them down as well.  I mean my little man was a very active little guy; he kept me going to the bathroom, if you know what I mean.  "He was playing basketball on my bladder".

3) Holding a baby in a sling position.  Now this one is very useful especially for those breastfeeding moms.  I breastfed my daughter and this was one of my favorite ways to nurse her.  Even when she wasn't eating, just by holding her in a familiar position was comforting for her.  I would suggest you try different ways and find out which one works best for you and your little bundle of joy.

 4) Hold and Rock the baby.  Now every mother is familiar with this method.  If you go anywhere where there are mothers and newborns (not just new borns), you will see a mother rocking her crying baby.  To a baby, this is comforting for them and it lets the little one knows that someone cares about them and that they are going to make it better.  This is something that every mother wants for her child; to be o.k. and to not to have to worry about anything because mommy and daddy will take care of it.

5) Find a method that's right for you and baby. This had to be my last one because regardless of how many methods you are recommended, you have to find your own method that works for you and your little guy or gal.  I can recall when I first found out that I was pregnant, I had people and family members telling me what I should and should not do.  Things that they did when they had their children and all the horrible stories that people tend to try to scare you with.  But, again, PLEASE listen to your heart and your little bundle of joy, I guarantee you your baby will let you know what works and what don't work.  Hopefully, these few tips will lead you on a path to finding your own solutions to calming your baby down, so that you will have a happy and smiling baby!
